Coriander - dried seeds and leaves
Leaves have a mild soapy aroma
The taste of coriander or cilantro leaves can be described as somewhat soapy. It is primarily used as a garnish on a variety of dishes. It is also used in naturopathy. Coriander belongs to the Umbelliferae family and grows as an annual herb. The plant contains wonderful essential oils and a very greasy oil that is often used as a substitute for palm and coconut oil. Coriander seeds on the other hand have a completely different aroma and are used both whole and in powdered form to flavour foods. It is also often used in the perfume industry because of its warm, spicy scent. Care should be taken while harvesting cilantro because it is phototoxic - ideally, gloves should be worn while harvesting.
